Five-times world champ Eric Geboers will be laid to rest in his native Belgium next week in a private ceremony, but fans are being invited to gather at the Lommel GP circuit to pay their respects between 7-9pm on Tuesday May 15.
Geboers was drowned on Sunday night when he dived into a lake to save his dog from drowning. He was not found until Monday afternoon.
Tributes from the world of motocross have flooded in, and the Geboers family have now made this statement:
The Geboers family wishes to thank everyone for the support they received in recent days. The amount of beautiful messages is overwhelming. Still, the family wants to ask to respect their privacy during the mourning process during this difficult period.
Eric has hit a lot of hearts during his life. He had a heart for both humans and animals. To give everyone the opportunity to say goodbye, a final greeting will be organised on Tuesday 15 May at the motocross circuit in Lommel. From 7 pm to 9 pm everyone is welcome to say goodbye to Eric and to give him a last time the farewell he deserves.
The funeral ceremony itself will continue in an intimate circle. In order to preserve the serenity of the ceremony, the family also asks to respect privacy. No media or public will be admitted. A befriended photographer will make some images during the funeral, after the ceremony they will be made available to the media.
