Joey Savatgy has been stripped of his lead in the East Coast 250 Supercross championship for course-cutting at Saturday’s East Rutherford Supercross. After crashing, he got back on but joined a later section of track. Following a protest, the AMA gave him a five-place penalty, dropping him from third to eighth. It now means Jordon Smith leads with 160 points from Zach Osborne and Savatgy who are both on 159.
The AMA statement says: “On April 29, 2017, after the 250SX main event, a protest was filed with regards to an on track incident involving rider #17 Joey Savatgy. After a complete review of the incident, including video and eyewitness accounts, it was determined by the Race Director that rider #17 did exit the track and re-enter in a different location. In doing so, rider #17 did gain positions and an advantage while cutting a section of the race track. This is in violation of rule 4.16.i.”
BREAKING: Joey Savatgy has been docked five positions as a result of this on-track incident in East Rutherford. It was determined by the AMA that Savatgy did not re-enter the racetrack at the closest safe point (cut track). The penalty drops Savatgy back to eighth and also gives Jordon Smith the championship lead. #SXonFOX
