Sudden death of Dirk Geukens

Former 500cc world championship rider Dirk Geukens from Belgium died suddenly yesterday. He was 57.

Dirk competed in the FIM 250cc Motocross World Championship between 1984-1986, and in the 500cc world championship from 1987-1996.

Geukens finished 3rdoverall in the 500cc world championship in 1990 – 1991, won 2 GP’s and finished on the podium 8 times. He also won 5 races between 1989 – 1995. He lived in Balen and was the trainer of Jago Geerts.

His final race win in the 500cc world championship was on August 27th 1995 at Reutlingen in Germany where he won the final race of the year. That day in Germany was also his final podium where he placed 3rd overall behind Joel Smets and Dietmar Lacher.

Guekens also helped Belgium to 2nd overall in the Motocross of Nations in 1990 at Vimmerby in Sweden and again in 1991 in Holland at Valkenswaard.

He will be sorely missed. Deepest condolences to Dirk Geukens’ friends and family at this difficult time.
