The second round of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels saw the Phoenix Tools Apico Kawasaki team head to Lyng in Norfolk. Following a positive opening round the team were hoping to build on the results at the second round.
While the rest of the country had suffered heavy rain during the week, the Lyng circuit was in great condition when the action started on track on Sunday morning. In the qualifying sessions, Youth rider Sam Atkinson posted the fastest lap time in the MXY2 class, while Carlton Husband finished 21st in MX2 with Jason Meara finishing 20th fastest in MX1.
In the MXY2 class, Sam made a good start inside the top 5 and quickly set about pushing forward and by the mid-race point was into second place. Sam then made a move for the lead on the following lap and took the opening race win.
After victory in the first race, Sam was looking for a repeat in the second moto. When the gate dropped Sam quickly moved into second place and was chasing the race leader when he made a mistake allowing Sam to close the gap, but unfortunately, he made a mistake on the following lap and slipped back and had to settle for second. The 1 – 2 result was enough to see Sam claim the overall victory on the day.
In the MX2 class, Carlton struggled with a bad start in the opening race and then got caught up in a heavy crash on the opening lap and had to restart near the back of the field. With a lot of work to do, Carlton pushed forward to claim 19th place at the finish.
The second MX2 race saw Carlton suffer another bad start and he was outside the top 20 on the opening lap and had to charge through the pack all race long to recover to 14th place at the finish and claim 16th Overall on the day.
In the opening MX1 race, Jason started inside the top 20 and was pushing hard during the early stages but suffered an issue with his goggles as the race neared the end and had to settle for 15th place at the finish.
For the second race Jason was hoping for a solid result, but unfortunately suffered a really bad start and got held up on the opening laps in traffic as it was hard to pass. Jason worked hard during the whole race and managed to finish in 18th for two-point scoring rides and 18th Overall.
Sam Atkinson – MXY2 – It’s been a really good weekend, I managed to get pole in qualifying on the final lap by 0.2 of a second. In the first race, I got an ok start and was in 6th as I pushed forward and managed to avoid the crashes ahead to take the lead and the race win. Then in race 2 I got a good start and moved into second when Alfie made a mistake in the lead and I closed up on him but then I made a mistake and ended up with second for first overall on the day so I’m happy.
Carlton Husband – MX2 – It’s not been a great day for me today. My starts in both races were really bad and it’s not good enough on a track like Lyng where it is hard to pass. In the first race, I was involved in a big pile up and came from last to 19th and then in the second race I was right at the back on the start and came back to 14th, but overall, I struggled with passing all day due to the positions I put myself in from having bad starts.
Jason Meara – MX1 – My weekend was ok, I’m satisfied for now as on Wednesday I didn’t think I would race with my shoulder injury. Race 1 was good as I was in the mix then I lost my goggles with about 8mins to go so I could not push on. In race 2 I had a terrible start and got badly held up as it was hard to pass but I still managed to take 2-point Scoring rides away whilst carrying an injury so that is a positive result for the weekend.
Barry Moore – Team Owner – Sam continues to impress in his first season on the all-new KX250, another National podium on the top step rounded off a great weekend for the team’s youth rider and puts Sam right in the mix after 2 rounds. Jason decided as late as Friday to race at Lyng after pulling out of round one at Culham with a shoulder injury. Jason had 2 solid results scoring points in both and our MX1 racer will come back better prepared for round 1 of the Michelin Mx Nationals at FatCat. Carlton suffered from poor starts in both moto’s and had a big crash at the start of Race 1 which was unavoidable. Carlton has the speed to run near the front group as he showed in race 1 at Culham and I know he’ll come out fighting for the first Michelin Mx Nationals round at FatCat.
