Latest MX tech for 2022 Yamaha enduro bikes

The Yamaha WR250F and WR450F enduro bikes feature some of the smartest technologies in the off-road world, including the unique reverse cylinder head motor design and the groundbreaking Power Tuner smartphone app that provides quick and easy track tuning.

The forward-facing intake and rear exhaust provide an inverted layout that not only provides greater intake efficiency for stronger engine performance, but also helps achieve a more centralized center of gravity by placing the air intake at the front of the motorcycle, with the fuel tank in the middle. The use of a rearward-slanted cylinder and wraparound exhaust also helps to centralize weight. This results in extremely agile handling and lightweight manoeuvrability.

In addition to their powerful and tractable engines, the WR250F and WR450F enduro bikes also benefit from an industry-leading chassis design based on a lightweight aluminum bilateral beam chassis with best-in-class speed-sensitive KYB front forks and rear suspension that provides precise and stable steering on even the toughest and most challenging tracks and surfaces.

For 2022, the WR250F has undergone a major engine and chassis upgrade and features advanced technology from the motorcycle that dominated the 250cc motocross class in 2021.

So far this year the YZ250F has won both the East and West AMA 250 Supercross titles and has racked up an impressive number of wins in the MX2 World Championship and the AMA 250MX National Championship. The even more powerful engine delivers stronger performance across the entire rev range. This, combined with a revised frame with rebalanced stiffness levels and a more powerful braking system, ensures that the new WR250F has the power to succeed at any level.

The new WR250F: Faster and more accurate

In the enduro world, the WR250F is already one of the most competitive and responsive motocross bikes in its class. The wide spread of torque makes this the kind of dirt bike that brings out the best performance in any rider – regardless of their skills and off-road experience. And the winning technology is backed by Yamaha’s premium quality and legendary reliability.

More powerful engine performance

The 2022 WR250F is equipped with a professional electric start liquid-cooled four-stroke engine that has been significantly improved with many of the power-boosting features from the current championship-winning YZ250F.

A new YZ250F-type cylinder head is one of the key components that gives the 2022 WR250F much stronger performance in the mid-to-top range for even faster special test times. The engine’s forward-facing intake also features new channels, and along with the wider YZ250F-type intake port, this new design provides superior intake flow for higher combustion efficiency and even more power across the rev range.

The new cylinder head also features a redesigned exhaust camshaft for more powerful low-to-midrange performance. New ECU settings are designed to optimize the usability of the new engine at all speeds. Thanks to the redesigned balancer and a new shift cam for smoother and easier shifting, racing becomes even more comfortable, even if you ride all day. The wraparound head pipe features a new heat protection cap that prevents snagging – and the short muffler now has a stronger bracket.

A key asset for WR250F riders is the Power Tuner app that allows you to tune the bike wirelessly via a smartphone. This innovative technology allows you to easily adapt the engine power to different terrains and changing surface conditions. With a switch on the steering wheel you can choose from 2 uploaded engine modes to change the engine power while driving.

Revised frame stiffness

For the 2022 race season, the WR250F’s lightweight aluminum double-cradle frame also features the latest technology from the winning YZ250F. The frame is manufactured using Yamaha’s advanced CF die-casting technique which allows the use of walls of different thicknesses. The frame has a revised balance of stiffness that is perfectly adapted to the higher performance of the new engine.

By adjusting the flexibility of the frame in specific locations and fitting new tuned rigid engine mounts, Yamaha engineers have created an incredibly strong chassis that also delivers excellent levels of feedback. The rider thus experiences a direct and distinct feeling of connection to the track surface.

Race-winning KYB suspension

The class-leading Yamaha KYB fork with its best-in-class speed-sensitive damping system has been further refined for 2022 with a number of changes resulting in better steering feel and an even more direct response. New damping settings match the revised stiffness of the new chassis, and ride quality has been further refined by a redesigned triple clamp top, handlebar clamps, footpegs and front axle.

The rear suspension has also been upgraded with revised damping settings on the KYB shock. This makes the WR250’s suspension system one of the best factory packages in the enduro world.

Better YZ250F type front brake performance

Stopping power is just as important as engine power, and the 2022 WR250F features a lighter and more powerful front brake derived from the MX2 GP-winning YZ250F.

This more advanced design uses a 30% stiffer front caliper fitted with larger diameter 25.4mm pistons and a new 270mm front disc. New brake pads have a 25% greater surface area than the previous system. This delivers powerful and highly controllable braking performance that can save precious seconds on critical test times.

New multifunction meter

During a long and hard day of riding, the compact and lightweight new multimeter keeps the rider fully informed with a range of information. In standard mode, the speedometer, clock, timer and two trip counters are shown, and in race mode the display shows the most important information needed during an enduro ride, such as average speed, timer and ride functionality. There is also an accumulated fuel consumption indicator and fuel and engine warning lights.

New graphics

New 2022 graphics reflect the Yamaha VictorYZone racing pedigree. The Icon Blue and Dark Blue in-mould graphics are highly durable and scratch resistant to keep the bike looking great.
