Watson third in debut MX1 race

Briton Ben Watson fought through to spectacular third place in his very first 450 race in the Italian International at Alghero. He overtook former world champ Romain Febvre and Ivo Monticelli to take third behind winner Glenn Coldenhoff and Husky’s Thomas Kjer Olsen.

In the MX2 race, Nicholas Lapucci dominated on his Fantic while Andrea Bonacorsi held off Tim Edberg who took third despite a crash. Mattia Guadagnini came from a first corner spill to fifth while Jago Geerts came through from a crash to sixth.

But in the Superfinal for the fastest MX1 and MX2 riders, Watson hit the gate then Lapucci, Geerts and Guadagnini all went down in the first corner. Watson rode hard to take seventh at the flag.

Febvre led from Coldenhoff as Olsen eventually caught up, then negotiated the backmarkers to nip through to the lead and take the win.
